Narrative

One day my family and I were going back to Virginia from West Virginia.  Every five minutes I had to go to the bathroom.  So, my mom and dad took me to the doctor.  I was five years old and all I knew was that they were putting needles in my arms and my parents were crying because the doctor came in and said I had diabetes.

Three years go by and I got used to getting about six shots a day.  One morning, I woke up and my blood glucose level was 35.  My mom took me to her work/daycare.  She left the room for ten minutes, and I had a seizure.  I got a glucagon shot in the butt and Ms. Nina called 911.   They did some stuff to me and left telling my mom I was all right.

I was ten when I had another seizure eating Captain Crunch.  I was feeling weak and shaky.  So, I got up to get a juice; then I had a seizure.  When I woke up, 911 paramedics were doing things to me like checking my heart rate.  They said I needed to stay in bed.  I went to visit my grandma, and we ate at Arby’s.  I was supposed to get five units, but my grandma gave me sixty units.  I took one bite out of my chicken sandwich and she realized what she had just done.  So, in the car we go to the hospital.  It took us about fifteen minutes to get there and another five to be seen.  I got to my hospital room and checked my sugar.  It was twenty so they gave me 100 ccs of sugar water.  I was released the next day.

I had diabetes for eight years, almost nine, when I learned that I can’t eat what I want when I want it.  If I eat sweets, I have to exercise for an hour or two.  I have to be healthy or I could lose a leg or my vision and damage my kidneys.  My lifelong habits to control my diabetes are: to eat healthier and be more active, instead of sleeping all day long or watching TV and falling asleep.
